"38 Cameron is still shimmering with the spirit that went into it. A line on a scrap of paper, meticulously crafted by an inspired builder, and lovingly nurtured by an unbroken stream of committed volunteers -- without whose passion for perfection this little corner of Cambridge could never have come into being. It's amazing how the space retains its sense of immediacy -- literally frozen in time -- and yet continually offering up new morsels for the eye. One explanation is that not everything went as planned. In fact, as the work progressed, the space itself began to assert its own demands, employing us to shape IT into what, apparently, it had always wanted to become. 38 Cameron shows that sometimes -- once in a while -- when there is a right constellation of determined people, inspired by a common purpose and uncompromising in their follow-through, something uncontainable CAN occur. And when that happens it means that Beauty itself has been victorious, because Beauty alone, in and of itself and for absolutely no other reason, is uniquely and utterly precious and beneficial beyond any rationale we could possibly contrive to justify it. You can experience this directly for yourself. As you walk thru 38, or perhaps while engaged in conversation, your eye inadvertently lands on something that is at one-and-the-same time, completely unfamiliar and mysteriously satisfying. You look to find out what it is -- but in that split second before there was even a thought, everything has already happened. Try it for yourself and see if it's true!
