In visual perception a color is almost never seen as it really is - as it physically is. This fact makes color the most relative medium in art.

If your husband, dad or grandfather is a wine lover you will definitely want to consult this list before buying their Father’s Day present this year. There are many items that a wine lover needs (or wants) that can make the perfect gift.

1. Etched wine glasses. You can get personalized wine glasses for the father in your life. Etch his name onto the glass, or a saying like “world’s best dad”. This is a great alternative to a personalized coffee mug.

2. Engraved wine bottle cooler. You can buy marble wine coolers and engrave the same things mentioned above. You can also choose a funny saying or simply the date. These coolers will last forever.

3. Wine Rack. This may seem boring, but there are so many innovative types of wine racks these days. Some hold just one bottle and some hold dozens. This is a great gift for a wine loving dad who doesn’t have someone to keep all his wine bottles.

4. Decanter. A wine decanter will allow wine to oxygenate and is a must have for wine lovers. You can buy a regular one, or a more original type like a globe shaped decanter.

5. Wine bottle stopper. These can be used to preserve a bottle of wine after it has been opened. A stopper keeps the air out of the bottle so it is like it has a cork in it. Again, you can get a run of the mill stopper or a fancy one with a design on it.

6. Cork trivet. This is a very original gift and is perfect for a wine loving dad who likes to remember his wine experiences by saving the corks. Many people hold on to the corks of their favorite wine bottles, but this gift can turn the corks into a useful trivet. Once it is completed, the trivet can be put under a cheese plate to complete a wine and cheese party.

7. Bottle bag. If your wine loving dad ever brings wine to a party, on vacation or to a picnic he may want a bag to carry it in. You can get a regular gift type bag or a neoprene one that prevents the bottle from clinking against things. They even make double neoprene bags that hold two bottles and keep them from clinking against each other.

8. Candles. There are candles shaped like wine bottles or candles that are placed in the neck of an empty wine bottle. Both options are perfect for setting a night of wine drinking.

9. Wine books. If the father in your life is a wine lover but not quite a wine connoisseur, you can buy him a book like “Wine for Dummies” or other wine books that explain the basics of wine drinking and wine appreciation.

10. Art. If the man you are shopping for enjoys decorating his home, you can buy him a piece of wine art. There are paintings and framed photographs of wine bottles, vineyards or other wine related scenes.

You may have heard people order different kinds of martinis, dry, dirty, shaken, stirred, etc but you have no idea what they are talking about. Many people are intimidated to order a martini in a bar or restaurant because they do not know about the different kinds or preparation methods and there is no such thing as a “plain old martini”. These days, there are several fruity (or “girly”) martinis. In many cases they are simply drinks served in a martini glass. Some drinks have the suffix “tini” added after another word or ingredient, suggesting they are a types of martinis. This article will go over the basic types of martinis and then explore some of the other drinks, such as a cosmopolitan, that are served in a martini glass and thus often considered a type of martini.

The first step to ordering a martini is to choose the main ingredient. There are two options, vodka or gin. If you do not specify, you will most likely get gin. Some people like to specify the brand of vodka or gin. For example, rather than saying “vodka martini” you can order a “grey goose martini”.
The next step is to choose whether you would like it “up” which means chilled, or “on the rocks” which means on ice. You can also say “neat” to indicate no ice. In this case it will be prepared with ice, but strained into your glass to you do not have ice cubes in your glass. The martini will be stronger this way, since the ice will not be left to melt in your glass, diluting the alcohol.

The second ingredient (after vodka or gin) is vermouth. You can specify the amount of vermouth you want with the terms dry, perfect or sweet. If you do not specify, it will be served perfect, with a medium amount of vermouth. You can also have it “dirty” which means olive juice is added to the vodka or gin.

You can also tell the bartended whether the martini should be shaken (this is the default) or stirred.
The last step is to specify the type of garnish you want. A Gibson martini has cocktail onions, “with a twist” means with lemon or you can order it with an olive (or two). Many times, if you do not specify it will come with an olive, or with no garnish at all.

Now you know how to order a “regular” martini it is time to move on to the fancy, sweet or girly ones. An appletini has apple pucker (a sour apple liquor) added to a vodka martini. A cape style martini has cranberry juice added. A cosmopolitan, made famous by movies and television shows such as Sex and the City, consists of vodka, triple sec, limejuice and cranberry juice. It is shaken with ice and served in a martini glass.

Now that you are a martini expert, go out to your favorite bar and order yourself one. Don’t forget to tip!
